There are 16 available crops to plant on your farm in Farming Simulator 22, each with its own values and seasonal needs. On top of the 13 crops carried over from Farming Simulator 19, there are three new ones: sorghum, olives, and grapes.

When deciding what to plant first, you’ll want to consider your overall goals with your farm; there’s no need to sink a ton of time and effort into potatoes if you want your focus to be on cotton production. That said, having an array of starter crops to build your farm up while you invest in other things is a feasible plan.
10 Sorghum (August-September Harvest)
Sorghum is a grain cash crop that requires you to have a seeder, as well as a grain header and combine harvester. Since this crop needs multiple machines, it may not be your favorite starter crop unless you plan on being a grain-heavy farmer.
However, you can sell sorghum directly on your own through a supply chain. This means you can make more money per crop harvested, and if you keep resowing you’ll build a solid chain. You can process it at your grain mill to create flour to increase local demand.
9 Wheat (July-August Harvest)
Another grain cash crop, wheat is helpful in a few different ways. Like sorghum, it can be processed at the grain mill for flour, or sold outright through your supply chain. It requires machinery like a seeder, combine harvester, and the grain header, but if you’re planning to be a grain farmer, these expenses are worth it.
You’ll also be able to feed wheat to your pigs and chickens, which will keep them healthy and strong for sale and egg production.
8 Barley (June-July Harvest)
Barley is very similar to wheat, needing a seeder, combine harvester, and grain header for growing, as well as being useful in your supply chain as a grain you can process into flour, or sell raw. It can also be turned into straw that can be used on your farm or sold.

You can also feed barley to your pigs and chickens, but you’ll also be able to use it to create chaff in a foraging harvester. Chaff is a secondary crop that you can feed livestock.
7 Oats (July-August Harvest)
Oats must be planted with a seeder and harvested with a combine harvester and grain header, like the other grain cash crops. With its harvest season being the same as wheat, you likely don't want to plant it alongside wheat, but it gives you an option between the two depending on what you want for your farm.
Like with barley, you can create chaff with it for your livestock, turn it into straw for bedding and food on your farm, or sell it to local markets. With similar stats and machinery requirements, oats are a good crop to have with barley since their harvesting seasons are back to back.
6 Sugarcane (October-November Harvest)
Sugarcane is one of the specialized crops in Farming Simulator 22, and as such requires a special planter and harvester. Despite being single-use in terms of equipment, once planted, sugarcane will grow back continuously without resowing; all you have to do is fertilize the land after harvesting.
It takes longer than most crops to grow, which may deter you from adding it to your farm, but it offers late-in-the-year harvesting and is low maintenance once you’ve done the initial prep work, which more than makes up for the effort required in the beginning.
5 Canola (July-August Harvest)
Canola is another grain cash crop available for your farm. Like the other grains, it needs a seeder, combine harvester, and grain header. For maximized profit, you’ll be able to sell it directly once harvested, or take it to the oil mill to create canola oil that you can sell via your supply chain.
Canola can also be used as chaff for your livestock or fed directly to your pigs as sustenance. Much like oats and wheat, this is a good crop to have growing for harvest after your barley season is over.
4 Potatoes (August-September Harvest)
Another crop to have for later in the year, potatoes are a root crop that needs its own potato planter and harvester. Though they don’t bring in as much as other crops, they are a good addition to your farm because they produce high volumes and allow for some income in the colder months.

They can also be fed directly to your livestock to help keep them healthy and strong and ready for their role in the supply chain, so if you find the income isn’t impressive you’ll at least have a constant food source.
3 Soybeans (October-November Harvest)
This grain cash crop is perfect for a farm set up for grains that lacks winter crops. Using the same equipment as the others — seeder, combine harvester, and grain header — you have a high-profit crop for colder months to grow alongside others like barley and oats.
It, too, can be made into chaff with a foraging harvester, or given to your pigs as food in the event you produce a significant amount (or if you’re growing it with sugarcane simultaneously).
2 Grass (Year-Round Harvest)
You may not think about having to grow your own grass on a farm, but it’s very important to add to your list of crops. It will grow every month except in the winter and can be harvested whenever you need it. The only real care required once planted is mowing it consistently, as this will keep it fertile and growing.

You’ll need grass to feed your cows and sheep, and you’ll be able to use it for hay and silage which then creates bedding and comfortable living for your livestock.
1 Cotton (October-November Harvest)
Cotton requires special harvesting equipment, as well as a plow for your fields before planting. You’ll also want to decide if you’re wanting to invest in cotton before any other crop because it needs a large area of your farm. While all these factors may make you shy away from investing in cotton, you’ll find it worth the hassle.
Cotton is valuable for its use in clothing and other textiles, and setting up your own in-house supply chain to process and sell it on your own will yield a high income.
