Forget about securing residency or employment -- when it comes to living in Prague, first things first: where can you get a decent haircut? The question has dominated our message boards and social networks for years and for many finding an answer is a lot harder than you think.

With salons opening their doors today after a lengthy government shutdown there's sure to be a flood of interest and lengthy waits for shearing lockdown locks and corrections for home-styled hair.

Prior to spring's first wave, we did an informal poll of our readers via Facebook groups and other online communities to find out their favorite, foreigner-friendly hair salon. These were the names that ranked highest among the English-speaking community for friendliness and customer service (barbershops are NOT included in this article).

Listed here (in no particular order), these were the 12 salons most frequently recommended by our readers.

Please note before booking that current restrictions include the use of face masks and the 1-client-per-15m² rule. Some salons may have additional hygiene rules in place or revised opening hours or a no walk-ins policy.

Former Chicago stylist Mark Phillip Gravell has been Prague since the '90s when he opened up his first salon in Vinohrady and quickly became one of Prague’s first and favorite native-English speaking hairdressers. The second "M" in the salon's name refers to his Czech wife Monika also a stylist and partner in the salon which specializes in not only cuts, colors, and blow-dries, but can do straightening and hair extensions.

Sweet Heavy Fresh is a fairly new entry in the Prague salon game. The English-speaking hairdressers also serve clients in Spanish and Czech from their stylish salon space, a little piece of Berlin (where owner Lucie lives) in Vinohrady. It's one of the salons that comes recommended for its blow outs as well as short pixies and fringe cuts; the trio of stylist there do men's, women's, and kid's cuts.

Salon UNIQUE is a small salon with with a big heart in Old Town. It's a Czech salon but offers English-language stylists and was repeatedly mentioned among our readers to be as friendly as they come (and staring up at that historic vaulted ceiling as you get your hair done doesn't hurt!).
